Guide your campaign spending with new priority and allocation features

By Tal Akabas·Oct 14, 2026·3 min read

Summary

Google Ads is introducing optional channel prioritization and channel-level budget allocation controls, rolling out globally across Search, Shopping, Performance Max, and Demand Gen. The update responds to advertiser demand for more transparency and budget direction, extending recent controls like Smart Bidding Exploration and campaign total budgets. With channel prioritization, advertisers group inventory as high priority or low priority. Campaigns will fully fund high-priority channels within Target CPA or Target ROAS goals before sending remaining budget to lower-priority channels. On Search, this can separate Google Search, Search partners, and Google Display Network. On Performance Max and Demand Gen, Google surfaces such as Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, and Discover are prioritized together as Google channels. Controls apply at account, campaign, and shared budget levels, with distinct tiers across campaign types.

Budget allocation adds a maximum daily budget percentage for low-priority channels or groupings. Enforcement is best-effort. This is especially useful for Target CPA or Target ROAS campaigns not limited by budget, where prioritization alone may not shift spend. Instead of all-or-nothing opt-outs, advertisers can test Search partners or Display with defined limits. Existing campaigns on those networks can set allocations if desired.

Key deadline: starting February 2027, for Search campaigns with Google Display Network turned on, the current spend allocation setup will go away and spending may shift. To retain the current configuration, set Display to low priority with a 50% budget allocation.

Actionable takeaways: audit channel performance and valuation before setting tiers; decide which inventory deserves full funding versus capped spend; use low-priority caps to test partners/Display without unlimited exposure; review shared budgets and campaign-level overrides; monitor spend and conversions after rollout because best-effort caps and funding order can change delivery. Features are optional and roll out over coming months, so plan tests for peak season and align bidding strategy, targets, and budget guardrails.

Analyst Note

What's notable here isn't the feature set so much as the direction: Google is acknowledging that fully automated budget allocation across surfaces hasn't earned universal trust, and is reintroducing placement-level levers that many media buyers lost when spend consolidated into Performance Max and Demand Gen. The framing matters — priority tiers and percentage caps sit closer to "steering" than "opting out," a meaningful departure from the binary exclusions that shaped channel strategy for years.

The competitive read is that this lands while Meta's Advantage+ and Amazon's DSP keep pushing toward fewer, coarser controls. Google differentiating on transparency and choice puts pressure on that model, though the value depends on whether best-effort caps hold in practice rather than drifting under aggressive bidding.

The key implication is structural: the February 2027 migration for Search campaigns with the Google Display Network enabled is the buried deadline. Accounts that historically relied on GDN opt-outs will need an equivalent configuration — Low priority plus 50% allocation — or accept unspecified spend shifts. Worth watching is whether priority tiers propagate into reporting granularity, since control without surface-level visibility is only half the trade.

Cross-channel marketing analytics: how it works in 2026

Cross-channel marketing analytics isn't about putting Meta, Google, and TikTok numbers side by side—they often double-count the same customer journey. Fragmented identity is the real culprit; without a first-party Customer User ID, attribution measures platform credit, not customer value. The article explains that deduplicating conversions across mobile, web, and CTV can lift attributed revenue by 30–60% and improve ROAS by 20%. It walks through attribution models, warns against platform-native analytics, and advises using an independent MMP for true cross-channel measurement. Ad ops takeaway: fix identity resolution first, because AI-driven optimization and budget allocation depend on trustworthy, deduplicated data.

Omnichannel Analytics Explained

Omnichannel analytics unifies customer behavior and campaign performance across mobile, web, CTV, and AI search into one identity, one attribution model, and one ROAS number. The core problem: a single customer seen on three surfaces becomes three users, inflating performance and corrupting attribution, LTV, and retention. Stitching channel reports into one dashboard is not unification—each channel keeps its own attribution logic, so conversions get double-counted and upper-funnel spend looks unproductive. For ad ops leaders, the takeaway is that identity resolution (deterministic plus probabilistic, privacy-safe) must happen at the data layer before any dashboard exists. Platform choice hinges on surface coverage, identity resolution, compliance, incrementality testing, and migration support.

Creative optimization: Why your best video ad fails as a static image

AppsFlyer’s 2026 creative data shows video and static image ads reward opposite creative qualities, so ad ops teams should plan, budget, and test them separately. Video spend is concentrating: gaming’s top 2% of video creatives captured 60.7% of spend, up from 53.5%, while image spend spread out. Top spenders are testing far more variations, widening the testing gap. Action/Strategy and Puzzle/Lifestyle show format-specific tone and social-proof reversals; Finance is the exception. Teams should use AI-assisted variation, analyze video winners deeply, keep broad image testing, and measure performance at attribute level.

Introducing AEO Attribution & ChatGPT Ads: Measure Every Customer AI Is Sending You

AppsFlyer now attributes AI-driven app traffic on both sides of the funnel: earned organic discovery across 8 AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok, Copilot, Manus, DeepSeek) and 13 search engines, plus paid campaigns via a new ChatGPT Ads integration using OpenAI's Conversions API. For ad ops teams, the practical win is deduplication and incrementality: SEO and AEO performance can be viewed side by side, and paid versus organic splits on the same platform (e.g., ChatGPT) reveal the true lift of ad spend rather than cannibalized organic conversions. Setup is low-lift, leveraging existing OneLink, App Links/Universal Links, and Smart Script infrastructure, with no added cost.
